Hello Claflin fans! 2016 is coming to an end and inspired by my friends Gabby from jaredleto.net and Luciana from amyadamsfan.com, i decided to put together a YEAR IN REVIEW post to summarize Sam’s career on this year.
It’s been a busy year for Sam with the theatrical release of Me Before You and the premiere of Their Finest at Toronto International Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival. Sam also filmed My Cousin Rachel, set to be released next year, and most recently Journey’s End.

The year began with the news that Me Before You would be returning to its original release date, in June 3, instead of March 4 like how it had been announced in November 2015. It was revealed in January by Laura Haddock, Sam’s wife, when she attended Critics’ Choice Awards that the couple had welcome a baby in December 2015.
The first look at Me Before You arrived on February 2, followed by the official trailer on the next day. An extended trailer released the next month, in March. Sam’s first public appearance was on February 9 at How To Be Single European Premiere. He reunited with Emilia Clarke and Jojo Moyes at The Weinstein Company 2016 BAFTA After Party, on February 14. It would be his last appearance before the start of Me Before You Press.
A new trailer for Me Before You was released by the end of April, right before the start of the press tour in May. On May 13 it was released a video of Sam, co-star Emilia Clarke and writer Jojo Moyes in which the trio revealed the new cover for the novel. But it didn’t stop there, as Entertainment Weekly published a video of the two actors freaking out over being on the cover of the novel– Sooo adorable! New promotional photos, on the set interview, movie clips and even a funny “Who’s more british?” video were all released on May 21.
Sam and Emilia Clarke attended a press conference in New York on May 22, before jumping right on the press junket the following day. On the next day, the duo made a stop at Good Morning America. Sam then made an appearance at AOL Build and Watch What Happens Live, before reuniting with Jojo Moyes, the cast and director at the film’s World Premiere, a couple of hours later.
Sam was unable to attend the European Premiere of the film as he had been until late in U.S.A. promoting the film. He did arrive however, hours after the big event, to host a fan screening in London. More interviews were released over the next weeks until mid-June, along with more production stills, behind the scenes photos and even a featurette on the film! If you’re looking to watch Sam and Emilia interact with each other (trust us when we say– They’re hilarious together) we suggest you watch them interview each other, play “Capitol or Westeros”, go on a eyebrow showdown, play a Hunger Games/Game of Thrones quiz, and speed dating. Oh and let’s not forget when Emilia Clarke revealed she framed Sam for stealing her Daenerys doll, among other pranks.
Wrapping up Me Before You press, Sam was spotted filming My Cousin Rachel with Rachel Weisz in England and Italy in May-June. A first look at the movie was also released, along with the news of a release date– July 14, 2017!
On July 21 Sam made an appearance at Giffoni Film Festival where he promoted Me Before You, which was set to have its release in Italy on September, and received the Giffoni Experience Award.
Me Before You received 58% of positive reviews, with an average rating of 5.5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie grossed $56.2 million in North America and over $151.2 million in other territories for a total of $207.4 million, against a budget of $20 million. The movie has received three nominations so far: Teen Choice Awards (Choice Movie: Liplock), Jupiter Award (Best International Actress) and People’s Choice Awards (Favorite Dramatic Movie). It also received an award for Truly Moving Picture Award during Heartland Film Festival.
On August 16 Me Before You was released on Digital HD, followed by its DVD and Blu-Ray release on August 30.
It was announced that Their Finest had been selected for The 60th BFI London Film Festival, in October. The film was also set to have its premiere at Toronto International Film Festival.
Sam made his first appearance at Toronto International Film Festival in September by attending the premiere of Their Finest, alongside his co-stars Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy and director Lone Scherfig. On the same day, it was released by Entertainment Weekly the very first clip from the movie in which we got our first glimpse at Sam in his role as Buckley. This was followed by the cast and director promoting the movie at the festival as they sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for an interview, and Sam even had some fun at Variety Studio afterwards. EuropaCorp bought the U.S.A. distribution rights to the film after its TIFF premiere.
On October 15 it was announced that Sam would be making an appearance at Savannah Film Festival, for a Q&A and screening of Me Before You. But that wouldn’t be all– He would be receiving a Spotlight Award!
Santa Barbara Film Festival announced on the same week that Their Finest would be closing the festival on February 11, in advance of the film’s stateside release– March 24, 2017! Hours after the announcement, Get Into Film released not only an interview with Sam taken during BFI London Film Festival, but two clips from the film!
In Early November it was announced that Sam would begin shooting Journey’s End on the second week of the month, in Wales. The movie is based on RC Sherriff’s play which takes place over four days in March 1918 in the frontline trenches of France. It also stars Paul Bettany, Asa Butterfield and Toby Jones.
With the release of Me Before You, Sam was featured in a couple of magazines. He graced the cover of Un-Titled Project #8 issue, Gentleman’s Journal August issue, Safari October issue and L’Officiel Hommes Winter issue.
What’s next for Sam?
2017 looks be quite busy for Sam, with the theatrical release of Their Finest on March 24. But before its release, the movie is set to be shown at Sundance Film Festival and Santa Barbara Film Festival.
My Cousin Rachel is set for a July theatrical release.
Having recently wrapped Journey’s End there is yet no word on its release.
Sam is set to star in Friday, a biopic on soccer player Robin Friday. Sam will be playing Robin Friday, but so far there are no words on any other cast additions– According to IMDB he is the only one cast in the movie so far, nor about when the movie will begin filming.
That’s it for 2016! We wish Sam and his family all the best in this coming year. We also wish a Happy New Year to all our visitors that have been supporting us for quite a while now! Happy 2017!
